Shawnee State (Ohio) raced out to the early lead and never looked back,
as the Bears defeated Grand View (Iowa) 75-55 in quarterfinal action
Saturday at the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's
Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway
Arena.
The Bears will put their 28-6 record on the line
against the winner of the Indiana Wesleyan/College of the Ozarks (Mo.)
matchup on Monday at 6 p.m.
Grand View's run at the national
championship comes to a close, with the Vikings finishing with a record
of 27-9. Head coach Garey Smith's team had its best showing in four
trips with its showing in the quarterfinals.
In its 15th
national championship appearance, Shawnee State will return to the
semifinals for just the third time. The last time that the Bears won
their way into the semifinals was in 1999 en route to winning the
program's first and only national crown. Twenty-year veteran head coach
Robin Hagen-Smith also guided Shawnee State to the semis in 1995.
Shawnee State led from start to finish, reaching a double-figure
advantage on a second-chance bucket by Catrice Mitchell at the 6:30
mark in the first half. With the opening half coming to a close,
Shawnee State held a 40-26 lead thanks to hitting 13-of-30 shots good
for 43.3 percent. Alison Meyer tallied 15 of her 24 total points in
opening 20 minutes. Grand View shot just 32.1 percent and was ice cold
from the 3-point line, missing all six tries.
The Bears
maintained their dominating play in the second half and pushed their
lead to as many as 21 points, courtesy of an Abby Ballman jumper with
4:21 remaining in the game.
Shawnee State had consistent
shooting in all facets of its game, hitting 13-of-30 field goal
attempts, 11-of-22 tries from the 3-point line and converted 14-of-21
shots from the charity stripe. Both Mallory Albers and Meyer posted
20-or more points the win. Meyer connected on 6-of-11 field goal
attempts, including three from downtown. She also picked up nine points
at the free-throw line. Albers scored 21 points (9-of-17) and had a
game high five steals.
Grand View's scoring efforts were led
by a pair of veterans and a rookie. Freshman Jennifer Jorgensen
registered 16 points, while Jamie Sickles and Bailey Schechinger's
careers each came to a close on 10-point outings. The Vikings finished
the game 18-of-52 from the floor (.346) and a mere 3-of-11 from long
range.
